My longest swim in the pool ever…yeah baby. Yeah.

Oh and you may note, I am still slow. I have decided my lot in life is to serve as an example of doing a thing and enjoying it, even if one is not GOOD at it.

Masters Class WOO HOO

Honestly, this is the FASTEST I’ve swam! I was watching others and noticing that for every one kick I do, they do two so I upped my kickage and it translated into feeling more balanced and streamlined in the water. I didn’t start doing it until about halfway into the workout, but it sure made a difference. I was a little frustrated because I was on for a PB in distance because of my pacing and then we had to stop for TEN MINUTES of announcements. Um, I pay to work out and be instructed. Email me, hand me a little half sheet on the way out, post it on the bulletin board, or write it on the white board…but don’t take ten of the last 15 minutes of my workout.

Oh well. I still do love the class. It was also nice because I was in a lane with two men who were nicely matched to my pace, for the most part.

My Masters Swim Class Tried to Kill Me

OMG what a tough workout! I don’t push myself when I swim, which is why I joined a masters class. My big fear is that I’d be the slowest one. Eeep! I’m not! I’m ALMOST the slowest one, though. But I decided the first class, when I WAS the slowest one, that this was okay. It gave me a goal to work towards. (Plus I later found out after a 400 time trial, that I was one of 3 who was finishing the entire set, so the other 4 that day weren’t finishing, they would just stop when the first ones finished. Since I came to do the full sets, I finished thinking that’s what we were supposed to do. So I really wasn’t the slowest. I was just the slowest of those who finished.)

Today was lots of drills.

Kick drills–hate ‘em

Sculling drills–hate ‘em

Pull drills–love ‘em!

Actually with the exception of the kick and the sculling, I definitely felt like each drill made me think more about my form, and having someone there watching was great. Made a huge difference.

But I am TIRED! I’ve been not feeling well, and recently I’ve only been swimming 50 min at a time (all I have time for in the mornings), so adding 50% of my time onto a hard swim makes for a tired Tory! That’s okay, though! I’ll never get faster if I don’t push myself!

My first Masters class workout

Well I took the plunge…HAHAHAHAHA! Oh I slay me! Anyhow, I was nervous. I went in early and warmed up because I wasn’t sure how much I’d swim and how much I’d listen or wait. I’m glad I did. The class went well, but there were announcements and the like, so there was some wait time. I’m the type of person who likes to get in and work out, period. We warmed up then did 200 time trials x2 then a 400 time trial with 100 splits. There was more, but I have to leave early so I really only get to be there for an hour.

I’m hoping that the next class we’ll do more swimming during that hour. I was slow, but not the slowest…well I did finish last each time, but I found out after the first 200 (feeling self conscious) that not everyone finished each set, so to me that means I’m not last. I felt bad that people had to wait, but that’s what I was there for…a workout, not to cut a workout short and wait at the wall. Total workout time was 40 minutes, so I REALLY hope we do more next time. I’d expect 40 min out of the hour.

I’m so hard core. ;)

Hmmm…faster today on my swim

I’m not sure what the difference was, except I was really focusing on my pull. Finished all 2200 yards feeling good. Taper week is hard on everything, I swear. Even my swim suffers!

Tonight I have a massage before my Wellness Wednesday group. I hope he can loosen my tight hammies so I’m not suffering on the marathon. If I am, it is what it is. I’m trying not to worry. Tonight’s run will probably be run/walk, so that’s good for my knees.

Leaving at 9:00 on Friday so that day will be my last run before Sunday’s marathon. I’m dedicating the marathon to Todd, a former student who was in a horrible automobile accident (as a passenger) on September 26. He’s such a great kid that it just kills me inside 100 times over that he’s in pain. I mean not that I want ANYone to ever be in pain, but if I were allowed to have a favorite, Todd would be one of my all time favorite kids.

Sigh.

Swim Slowbee, Swim

Slowbee Joe today! But oh well. It’s Monday and I had Monday arms. At least I didn’t have anyone standing in my lane, or trying to get out while I was swimming.

Roy swam too. It feels good on his gouty leg. Doctor thinks he might have gout. How odd is that? He doesn’t have any risk factors, beyond being a little overweight (but that’s generally a factor along with diet). He will know when his blood tests come back. I’m glad he’s getting it taken care of. It’s only been almost a year since it started hurting. (Don’t get me started on whining as a way to treat ailments.)

Swimming with the Flowers Twins

You know, some people can use pool etiquette. I don’t blame them because they don’t KNOW the etiquette. It should be required reading before lap swims, though. At the pool I swim in, there are no lane separators so you choose a lane by stripe. Generally people have no issues with this. You swim in the lane you’re in. Today a guy I called “Brown flowers” because he had on brown, flowered trunks, kept getting in my lane. It wasn’t “sharing” my lane, it was STANDING in my lane. He was obviously a new swimmer, out of shape, so he’d do a length at a time. No problem. Not the most graceful guy in the world, but then I used to appear to be having a stroke so I’m not talking. But Dude, you can SEE me swimming. WHY are you right where I’m going to turn around? Seriously! Every time he’d be down at the shallow end, I’d be swimming along and he’d be standing ON the line, a little to his right, so that I had to either turn before hitting the end, or turn at the corner (I was in the far west lane). Very frustrating.

Then another guy, “Blue Flowers” cuts right in front of me while swimming, so he can climb out. Do you just walk into traffic when crossing the street, or did you think “I bet that lady would like my blue flowered ass in her face as she swims by. Who am I to not oblige a lady?”

Etiquette:

If you’re in the lane two, you do NOT stand in lane one to rest.

If you are not circle swimming, stay on your side.

If you need to cross an active lane, wait for the person to swim PAST you before you cross, don’t try to play swim chicken with them because you’re walking with more resistance against you than they have. You may not get past them in time, and it’s not fair to require them to slow down for you.

Nobody wants your ass in their face. Ever. Well, at least not at the pool.

Musical Swim

Oh I love to swim, and I love to sing. I wonder if other people can hear me sing under the water, ’cause I do, you know. I do. “Why am I hearing songs from Phantom of the Opera? Was that from The Music Man? I feel like I’m in Broadway’s swimming pool!”

Yeah, I’m a dork, but I can swim 2100 yards AND sing a selection from Broadway musicals from A-U (Q is a challenge) at the SAME time!
