Relaxing Swim…Aggravating Shower

Nothing like being the only person in the pool for almost an hour. One of the things I love about swimming is that it’s so quiet. Yes, there is music playing, but you can’t hear it under water. It’s very peaceful. Now let’s compare and contrast the swimming experience to the “being in a locker room with four gossipy teenage girls who won’t shut the heck up.” I am telling you, I almost performed a quadruple murder this morning, and I suspect that the other ladies in the locker room at 6:15 would have come to my aid, not theirs. Good freaking LORD! First of all, they’re in the showers (there are four shower stalls) for over 10 minutes gabbing and squealing and laughing about the STUPIDEST things (as many teenage bubble-headed girls are wont to do). Over ten minutes. I’m out there waiting. Waiting Waiting. I don’t do the soap up in public thing. I feel too self conscious. Finally it looks like one is done. Shower goes off but she stays in there and stays and stays. I am patient at first, but after I notice she is GETTING DRESSED IN THE SHOWER STALL I’m ready to lose it. I was just about to go over and mention that some of us have jobs and there are changing stalls, when she FINALLY got out. My shower was four minutes of sheer horror. Gab gab squeal giggle gab gossip squeal giggle gab gossip plan murder giggle gossip gab consider drowning myself in the shower squeal horse laugh gossip no way yes way gossip squeal screech gab consider cutting my wrist with my razor squeal gossip gab. If you’re doing the math…I waited over 10 minutes, I took a 4 minute shower. One (the dresser) was in there when I came in. Yes, each of them took over a 15 minute shower, squealing, gossiping, and yapping the entire time. It was like being locked in a steel crate with 4 yapping pomeranians, only I think the poms would have had more interesting things to say. Then they spread out all over the room. There are four hand dryers for hair, two of them take up two each. Um. Hey gals! Look around you! Do you notice you’re NOT the only ones in the locker room! Oh hey! My patience was wearing so thin…but I maintained and no one was hurt, and somehow I managed NOT to be late to work. Grrrr. Oh and my workout? It went pretty well. I did drills and then finished up with 600 free swim. I hate kick drills, just sayin’.

Just a swim

Went out and decided on an endurance swim today. No drills except a few with the pull bouy. Swam until I hit the letter Z (that’s how I count my 100s…music a-z) and then got out. Felt okay. Nothing exciting. Used the zoomers for part of it.

Swim - 1.1 hours - 11/10/2009

Warmed up with 400 yards, then alternated 3x (50 kick, 100 pull, 50 kick), followed by 4×200 crawl, then 2×300. Felt pretty good. Used zoomers for part of it to work on my kick.

Drills Drills Drills

Lots of drills today. Pulled out my Zoomers to work on my sad and pathetic kick. Lo and behold, they work! Did lots of kick drills without killing my back or going backwards. Yes folks, I have gone backwards during kick drills…that is how sad my kick is.

One of the reasons I don’t use them often is a fear that they’re taking away from my workout. Fear no more! My HR was up higher than normal the entire time. The only other issue is the blister (Lisa will be so thrilled since I never blister on marathons) I get on one of my toes. I don’t have a marathon for three weeks, though, so it’s all good. (Is it sad I want to run one this weekend and am kind of bummed I’m not?)

I think I’ll get some gloves once I get paid because I also need to bring up my stroke a little better. I actually was truly focusing on that today as well since I didn’t want to over-depend on the zoomers to propel me through the water.

I need serious help with my breast kick, though. I can’t get ANY movement through the water with that! I have strong legs, what am I doing wrong?

Swimmy Swim Swim

Finally got my hiney back in the pool this morning. I just don’t feel the swimming love when it’s cold out, but I need to keep my base so I made myself go. Did a warm up and a few kick drills…I am a HORRIBLE kicker. Then just decided to work on my stroke and do a long swim. Kick drills always cause my back to spasm, so I’ll probably always be a horrible kicker.

Felt pretty good and relaxed during most of it after the first 200 yards. Not very many people there today, just a walker and a splasher. Eyes have recovered from the locker room…the towel is to cover and dry with, not to toss over your shoulder while you waltz around in the altogether…just sayin’.

Swimmy Swim Swim

Finally feeling better today! After three days off I decided a swim would be the workout of the morning. It felt really good, overall. My muscles felt a little creaky after three days of laying in bed or on an easy chair. I just consider them well tapered for this weekend’s marathon!

Still wish I could swim faster, but at least I can swim and others can’t so that, in itself, is a blessing.

Swimming the Line

First time back, without being sick, in the pool since swimming open water all summer. Wow, it’s hard! There are no birds to see as I reach for a breath, and no log to hang out at and chat in the middle of the lake. Just the same old line over and over. I kept running into the wall and had a hard time finding my mojo…in fact didn’t find it until Jesus Christ Superstar (I sing showtunes in my head to track my laps, and J is at 1000 yards, so I use the play JCSS. It’s easier than counting using numbers. I know one mile is Rent and if I get to Xanadu I can sing anything I want for Z.)

Felt pretty okay…not great, just kind of wonky.

Blah swim

I was just NOT feeling the swimming love today. Couldn’t find my groove and my mojo sunk to the bottom of the pool. Finally decided to get out, soak in the hot tub a bit and head to work. It’ll be back when I swim on Tuesday.

Back to the Pool

School starts today so back to the Y pool. Started with an easy 400, then did some drills. Kick drills kill my back, so I spread them out. I wonder if it’s something I’m doing wrong. Did some speed work and suddenly, out of nowhere, Hank rised up and smote me with his stick of pain. Freaking Hank…I was in my 3rd 50 and had to stop and see if it would go away. I could press and feel it. Hurt down my arms, in my back, and of course at the site of my stupid *&%$@# pancreas. Decided to do "Hakuna Matata" and if it didn’t stop, I’d call it a morning. It subsided by the time I finished "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" so I swam a few more easy laps, did 150 more of speed work then finished up. (Note: I "sing" Broadway showtunes in my head while I swim to keep track of laps…L=lap 12=The Lion King ergo Hakuna Matata.)

Overall a good swim, although slowed by Hank.

I can swim…sorta

Okay the Garmin map is COMICAL! I swear…it is .55 miles from the dock to the log but on the way back (didn’t turn it on on the way out) it said .9 miles. Now I do believe it was off, so I’m only counting it as a bit over a mile, but when you look at the points that are obviously correct, it’s a JOKE! I was going the WRONG WAY at one point…okay at MORE than one point! Roy wasn’t with us since he’s home recuperating, so it was just Lisa and I out there. Dear Jesus, please help me with my sighting. It’s a darn good thing I have endurance because this going out for a 1 mile swim and ending up swimming 50% more would be very bad if I didn’t have good endurance. Beautiful afternoon, though! Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
